Getting to Seefeld: train, car and airport compared
Seefeld has a railway station in the middle of the village, and that changes the calculation. Why arriving by train is often the better choice here – and what you should know about the Zirler Berg if you drive.
Most guests come by car. For Seefeld that is not automatically the better decision – the village is one of the few alpine destinations where the train stops in the centre and where you genuinely manage without a car once you are here.
By train
Seefeld in Tirol station is in the village itself, a few minutes' walk from Post Seefeld. It is served by long-distance trains, including from Germany, and hourly by the S6 suburban line from Innsbruck.
From Innsbruck: hourly on the S6, a good half hour over the Seefeld saddle.
From Munich: via Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald. On the German side regional trains run hourly to Mittenwald; roughly every second train continues to Innsbruck, calling at Scharnitz and Seefeld. Pure journey time from Munich: around two and a half hours.
The line is the Mittenwaldbahn, also called the Karwendelbahn – 16 tunnels, 18 bridges and viaducts. You are not merely travelling to a destination, you are travelling through a sight in its own right.
And once you are here: the PlateauCard we give you on arrival is, for the length of your stay, a ticket for every regional bus – as far as Telfs and Mittenwald – and for the train between Seefeld and Scharnitz. Arrive by train and you will not need a car.
By car
From Innsbruck (A12): exit at Zirl, then up the Zirler Berg. About 30 minutes. The road is well built but steep: heavy vehicles and vehicles with trailers are banned on the descent, and the diversion runs via Telfs. If you are towing a caravan or trailer, plan for that before you reach the hill rather than on it.
From Munich (A95/B2): via Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Mittenwald to Scharnitz and on to Seefeld. Around two hours from Munich. This route avoids the Zirler Berg entirely.
Vignette: you need a vignette for Austrian motorways. If you arrive via Mittenwald and Scharnitz you use no motorway and need none.
By air
Innsbruck (INN): around 40 kilometres, about 45 minutes by car or by train with one change. The nearest airport.
Munich (MUC): around 150 kilometres, about two hours by car. Considerably more connections, but a longer transfer.
Good to know
The centre of Seefeld is a pedestrian zone. Access to the hotel for luggage is possible; after that you park in the garage – let us know when you arrive and we will guide you in.
