Winter walking and tobogganing in Seefeld: 142 kilometres without skis
Not every winter day has to be a ski day. 142 kilometres of cleared winter walking trails, seven toboggan runs and two ice rinks make Seefeld just as interesting for anyone who prefers to be on foot.
There are winter guests who never put on skis and are still outdoors every day. Seefeld is built for them. The region clears and signposts 142 kilometres of winter walking trails, and adds seven toboggan runs, two ice rinks and 35 kilometres of snowshoe routes.
The advantage of the plateau applies here too: the paths cross wide, open ground rather than narrow valleys. You walk in the sun.
Four winter walks worth doing
Circuit around the Wildsee. Ten minutes' walk from the village square, about four kilometres, flat and fully cleared. The one for your arrival day.
Seefeld – Wildmoos – Mösern. The classic plateau circuit, across meadows and through woodland, with views of the Wetterstein and Karwendel. If you would rather not walk back, take the bus from Mösern.
Mösern to the Ropferstub'm. A short, sunny path to a hut best known for its view down into the Inn valley.
Gaistalalm in the Leutasch valley. The longest of the four, deep into the valley, quiet and free of lift noise.
Add to those the path to the Triendlsäge through the Katzenloch and the circuit around the Gschwandtkopf – both well signposted and marked on the region's winter walking maps.
Tobogganing
The best-known run in the region descends from the Katzenkopf in Leutasch to Seewald: roughly 2.5 kilometres, some 230 metres of descent, a gradient of around twelve per cent. It is considered one of the finest natural toboggan runs in Austria and is floodlit on selected evenings.
There are seven toboggan runs in the region in total. Rent a toboggan in the village or at the runs themselves; for the floodlit evenings it is worth checking the current winter sports report, as operating times depend on the weather.
Snowshoeing
35 kilometres on seven marked routes. Snowshoeing has the best effort-to-experience ratio of any winter activity: you need no technique, only stamina and the right route. What matters is staying on the marked paths – the surrounding woodland is wildlife sanctuary, and in winter every disturbance is expensive for the animals.
Ice skating and Bavarian curling
There is a natural and an artificial ice rink in the middle of the village. A free introduction to Bavarian curling is part of the programme – we have had guests postpone the tobogganing for it.
Good to know
Sturdy shoes with a good sole are enough for winter walks; crampons help when it is icy and can be rented in the village. The paths are cleared but not gritted.
Afterwards: sauna world and panoramic whirlpool, and for the evening a table at the Platzhirsch right on the village square.
